Cal Hackworth — On Mission in Hawaii

My name is Cal, and I’m the Residency Coordinator at the Hawaii Leadership Residency. I’ve been with Genesis Collective for the past seven years as part of the Genesis Costa Mesa Crew. Over the years, this community has been pivotal in my faith and the way I view the community. I’ve learned that community is a necessity for spiritual growth, and knowing God deeper. Genesis Collective has shaped my understanding of what it means to live life on mission, and has played a key role in sending me out on a global journey. I’ve been blessed by the leadership and support of the collective, which has continually pointed me toward God’s calling on my life.

Not long ago, I received a call from the team at Makanalani, informing me that they were looking to fill the Girls Coordinator position. The role was a unique opportunity that included living on the beautiful island of Kauai, mentoring young adults through their twelve-week program, working on the farm, and baking over 100 loaves of sourdough bread each week. As soon as I heard about the position, I immediately sensed that God was opening a door that I had been praying for. I had no idea what to expect, but I felt peace in knowing that this was the direction God was calling me. Three weeks later, I packed my bags and made my way to Kauai.

Makanalani is truly a hidden gem of Hawaii. The moment you step foot on the property, you can feel God’s peace surrounding you. There is something special about this place — the natural beauty, the rhythm of life here, and the intentionality of the community. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before. I’m deeply blessed to be part of this program, walking alongside young adults as they journey through a transformative season of their lives. Witnessing what God is doing in their hearts and minds has been awe-inspiring.

Through our partnership with Genesis Collective, we’ve been able to take discipleship to a deeper level, enriching the experience for both the residents and staff. We’ve had the privilege of learning from teachers who have come to share their wisdom and life experiences in ministry. These individuals have poured into us, and their impact has been felt in ways that words cannot fully express. From Bible teaching to practical life lessons, the residents have been equipped not just for the next three months, but for the rest of their lives. It’s been amazing to see so many young people experience lasting transformation.

The residents who come through this program are given more than just skills or knowledge. They’re given a community — a place where they can step into their God-given potential and begin to understand how they can serve others with purpose and passion. The transformation I’ve witnessed has been nothing short of incredible, and it’s a privilege to be part of this life-changing work.

This program provides not only the opportunity to learn practical skills, but also the space to grow spiritually, be challenged, and to live intentionally in community. All of this takes place while surrounded by the stunning beauty of God’s creation — a constant reminder of His faithfulness. If you’re looking for a transformative season of being equipped for a life on mission, learning practical skills, and serving with an intentional community, then this is the place to be. God has so much in store for each resident who steps onto this land, and I am excited to see how He will move in the lives of all who come through the program.
